I believe that innovation and daring have been, and must remain, the driving forces behind U.S. ascendance and prosperity.  As a UC president emeritus and an active physics research scientist, I am deeply committed to advancing R D, & D—research, development and delivery—in ways that will safeguard our national security and strengthen our global competitiveness.
